This looney dealer wanted $250 for a 1938 D walking liberty "SEGS AU-50!" Yeah, I'll get on that right away! :goof:

According to Numismedia, the retail value is $252.
I personally wouldn't pay $250 for the coin, I'd try to get it closer to wholesale.
But $250 isn't that extreme of a price if it really is AU50, and if you are buying the coin and not the slab, the fact that it is graded AU50 by SEGS, means absolutely nothing.

I have had good luck with most SEGS coins, and find them close to ANACS ( for what that is worth) in grading. They do handle many of the variety coins that PCGS and NGC don't. You can often get good deals if other bidders think it is SGS, which it isn't. But of course lets do the mantra~~ Buy the coin and not the plastic ~~

The dealer is going full retail (actually under) so how nuts is he?
Depending on how bad he NEEDS to sell it he'll get it.

38-D is a tougher coin and dealers don't want to sell these at bid.

Agreed, SEGS can be pretty tough on circulated coins.

As for Uncs, I have no experience.

I don't know about SEGS, but when you look at the coin, does it say I am AU to you? If so, then it sounds like a good price. Tracking down a decent 38-D is a real killer.

SEGS is much better SGS. I dont have any concerns about buying SEGS graded coins either.

SGS Is not a grading company all it is one -two seller on eBay.they made a label about 10-15 year ago and they just seal then in to there own holders they do not grade them they just guess

What is a looney dealer doing with US coins anyway? Wouldn't he only be dealing with canadian dollars/loonies.

sorry but I find it funny.

If it was me I would double check to make sure it actually is AU. like check the wear, and check the rims, hits etc. grade it yourself and be conservative, if it comes at au-50 then your in good shape. if not then pass on the coin. 38-d is hard to get tho

I've been jumped on in this forum for 1 off topic post. Please don't think I'm trying to derail this thread; but that's an AWESOME coin in your avatar, LostDuchman! Is it yours?
