Here is a cool variety in the IHC series. I found this one today, not attributed (as usual) and did not realize what I had until I got home. I purchased because it was a fair price and needed the 1865 "fancy 5" variety in my set. It is graded MS63BN.

It is the "debunked" 1865/4 overdate. I say debunked because in the 1990's, the same date repunch was found on 1865 2-cent pieces, causing a re-classification. It still garnishes a premium, but not like it used to.

This coin can be easily attributed with the bold repunching in the "1" in the date, as well as by the horizontal die striations by the eye, ear and cheek. The 5/4 portion is very tough to see in any grade.....just looks like a few bumps and a line.

This is an extremely cool thread and it seems everywhere I turn today, someone is teaching about IHC's. Redraider, did you see Rick Snows post about his calendar over on the CU forum? Check it out, you will love it.

Is there a premium for the 1865 Fancy 5?

The "fancy five" and "plain five" were minted in similar numbers. I think the plain 5 actually has a lower mintage of the two.

People (ebayers) will try to get a premium out of either one if its designated on the label, but you can readily find both in unmarked holders.

The Fancy 5 is definitely more valuable if it has the doubled die reverse.....less than 50 known examples (1 residing in my collection!)
