Im pretty sure this is a double die.. the letters, wings most of it looks like a set of letters on top of another set, but even more.. some of the letters look different.. What do you think? Is this one a double die?
    oh it's an 1983

It looks promising. I took your pic. & sharpened it a bit and inverted it . The wing has nice doubling along with the letters on the bottom.

I would say you have got yourself a double die.:thumb:

Well....I'll leave it up to Mike or Bill....but I sure don't see a DD....tell me this...
The "other" set of wings....are they flat or rounded like the real wing?

I think they look rounded, raised. Im going to wait and see what they think also... Like I do most im unsure about, but I think I may have to send this one in.
Speedy..I need to ask something else.. on some coins you can see hum.. something like a starburst 'little lines' going outward all around the surface of a coin. almoust look as if it had been done to a coin.. but it's seen on too many..must be something that just happens sometimes. You have any ideal what im talking about? if so.. whats that called, and what causes it?

See this burst of lines going outward...is this a natural thing? The reason I ask is I found a quarter, that looks so odd, almost all the front is missing.. but the back is perfect.. and it has this starburst on it. wasn't sure if it was an error or ... something else

    Hi All,
Sorry but this is mechanical doubling combined with some doubling due to "die fatigue". It's very common on Nickels and nickel clad coins as nickel is a very hard material and dies wear pretty hard giving you that doubled appearance around the lettering and other details.
I always feel like a party pooper but mechanical doubling is deceiving and can be found on so many coins.
    Have Fun,
    Bill

Foundinrolls---YOU ARE NOT A PARTY-POOPER!!!! If everything we posted was what we thought it was, we would not ask for your opinion. Keep'em comin;)

:kewl: Your not a party pooper at all... When I come here..it's because I myself am not sure, have doubt..and I need answers... If everything was always what I wished / thought it was..would not be fun searching anymore... Well....might be even more fun.. but you know what I mean.. I respect your opinion.
I was so sure this one wasn't a mechanical doubling.. Think im gonna keep it for a while.. It's a cool coin
As always thank you for the information.:thumb:

    Hi All,
Thanks for your kind words :). I enjoy helping but sometimes I'd love to tell you that you hit the jackpot :) In any case, it's a good coin to keep as an example of other forms of doubling.
    Have Fun,
    Bill
