Hello Everyone. This 1872 Shield Nickel I picked up a few weeks ago I got it for a good price because the seller had it graded lower than I think it is. When I was looking closer at it I noticed some possible doubling on various locations on the coin (D in “united” S and T in “states” several of the stars and the 5). Also the S in “Cents” is missing the lower part of the S and I don’t think this is because of wear. Also the circle under the cross has something going on. I think I have an interesting die variety that could be identified but I don’t own the cherry pickers guide. I was hoping someone could take a look and tell me what you think. Also if anyone can point me towards a website with any information on VAM nickels I would appreciate it. I did a search and could not find much information about Shield nickels. Any help would be great. I have attached several photos and links larger pics. I can get others if they are needed. Thanks in advance for any help.:smile http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc1/jerhull/Coins/img013.jpg http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc1/jerhull/Coins/img014.jpg http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc1/jerhull/Coins/img016.jpg http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc1/jerhull/Coins/img015.jpg
Cherrypickers has a nice section on Shield nickels. You may be surprized to find out just how many varities of these nickels there really are! Pick up a cherry pickers guide you'll be glad you did. Nice coin too I should add .....classic coins .
Nice coin, but that looks like machine doubling to me from what I can see. In the CPG there are several DDO's listed along with several RPD's. This coin does not match any of them. Also - broken letters on the reverse is common on shield nickels. Good book and I recommend it if buying Shield Nickels. Also Ed Fletcher is working on a new book and hopefully it will come out later this year.
OOPs - here is a link for shield nickels. I think speedy was working on one for jefferson nickels - do not have that link.
