hi i only know a little about coins/mint errors and such so im wondering if anyone knows anything about quarters [washingtons]in the 70s[1977 to be exact] that could of possibly somehow been struck over a 1973 quarter?the reason i ask is i have a 1977 no mint mark but above the first 7 in the date there is a big blob of up rised metal and the 2nd 7 appears to be stamped over a 3 if anyone has any information about this id sure like to hear from you .please, and thank you
Highly doubtful that you have what you think you have. It's basically impossible for that to have happened. That being said, take clear close pictures of your coin (both sides) and post them and we will help you out.
Welcome to the neighborhood, Susan! Like furry said, it is highly doubtful that your coin has one date struck over a different date, but we would need good, clear photos before we can help you. If you are interested in coin collecting as a hobby, there is a lot to learn, but if you are just looking for errors to flip for financial gain, I hope you have not had that idea put into your head from sites on BoobTube or books like "Strike It Rich With Pocket Change". What these sources don't tell you is that the likelihood of finding a rare coin or even one that is in good condition out of circulation is somewhere between rare and "practically none". You would have a better chance hitting the Powerball. Chris
You can't have a 1977 quarter struck over a 1973. And if it was, it wouldn't be lined up exactly the same, since it is a super high speed process, so you would be able to see both (coins) minted on the same planchet. You would also have a 50/50 chance that there would be 1 heads AND 1 tails on each side. It's around 100% that what you have is a damaged quarter worth a quarter. But, post a photo. You never know.
