Dateless Standing Liberty

  1. image.jpeg How much is it worth, and how do I make it show its date like nic a date safely? And how do I clean it?

It is worth spot, silver scrap. It is not worth cleaning as a collectable coin; and I might be wrong, but I do not think you can bring the date back like you can on nickels. Nic a Date to my knowledge only works on nickels.

Sorry, but's it only worth melt value. There is no way I know to restore the date. Nic-a-date doesn't work. I recall some members posting that they had some success restoring dates, but it wasn't easy.

Check the reverse to make sure it isn't a Type 1.

What does it matter if type I or II? The coin could be either a 1916 or 1917. I have a roll of type I without dates or mint marks. Is there a premium for dateless type I SLQ?

No it couldn't. You don't need a date to be able to identify a 1916.

EDIT to add that coin pictured isn't a 1916

The 1916 is identifiable even when dateless and some will pay a pretty good premium for them, not me, but some will. I don't think that there's any premium for type I other than that.

More than a pretty good premium, a dateless FR 2 1916 is still a four figure coin.

There's a slight premium for dateless type ones plus potential lowball interest. Type 2s need some sort of date visible to identify the year.

Even old dogs learn something occasionally. I found on line an old CoinTalk thread that has a link to seeing the slight differences on dateless type I coins. I will now need to search my roll and see if any 1916 coins pop up. Doubtful, but maybe!
    Thanks for the education.

At the very least at least you'll get some renewed excitement searching the roll.

The old CoinTalk thread is 1916 vs 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter no date.
This site is in the thread. It might help others distinguish between no date SLQ, Type I vs Type II

Seriously, four figure, that's just ludicrous. I personally wouldn't pay ten bucks for one.

With only 52,000 minted, an AG3 coin is $1800 to $20

But an AG would have a date, there's a huge difference there.

I do not dispute the big difference with a date verses dateless, but to complete a full set of SLQ, you need a 1916, so I can see limited budgets buying the few available to complete their sets; date or no date. The old quote "A sucker is born every minute"

Saying you wouldn't pay 10 dollars for a guaranteed four figure coin is really what's ludicrous.

No you almost certainly wouldn't see a date on type 1s in AG 03. Generally you need a 6 before you can read any of the numbers at all and a 4 just to see any markings. Their date was raised on early SLQs and was one of the first things to wear off. If you want one that has no parts of the numbers worn off you are looking at VFs and higher, even Fs generally have the top of the numbers already worn off

My G-6 has a full date. It's the reason that I bought that particular example though, I'd never seen another so complete.

And of course I'd go for it as a flip, just saying that I wouldn't want a dateless piece in my collection.

  20. Is mine 1916 or 1917?
