    Hi All,

Came across this penny at the last coin show. Just getting around to looking at it. What do you make of the date? Dateless? Die error?

First picture looks like 1897 to me. The next to the 1 has two loops in the shape a an 8, second has the shape of the 9 with one loop.Cheryl

I also believe that it is an 1897, but I do not think that is you question. I would guess that the die had some grease on it. It would help if I could see the rest of the coin to see how the rest of the letter looks compared to the date.

If you're wondering if it could be an 1877 you should post a pic of the reverse.

He doesn't have to, it isn't. On the 1877 the date is straight with the last 7 a little low. On this coin the date is following the curve of the rim. Also, even though it is faint you can tell this is a type II obv hub so it was made after 1886.

If I squint, hop on 1 leg and gargle at the same time I see the date as 1897.

No, really, I think the 2 numbers may have been ground off years ago and put back into circulation or maybe a grease filled die caused the weak almost nonexistent 89. I can barely make out the 8 and to a lessen extent the 9. 1897 It was a very good year.
