Hello Everyone! Today I recieved this in change. (Never done that before!!) I was just wondering if it had any value as it is dateless. Thanks http://www.flickr.com/photos/16307997@N00/281817903/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/16307997@N00/281817892/in/photostream/
Always net to find one in change! Undated Buffaloes are worth about $.50 each. Btw, there is an acid substance that can make the date visible, although it will destroy much of the numismatic value of the coin. Who knows, maybe you have a rare key date in the series? The substance is referred to as Nic-a-Date, but I don't know if that's slang or what.
A small dab of 'the works' toilet bowl cleaner on a q-tip works pretty good. Also, it looks like an S mint.
Yes it does look like an S mint. Evenmore so on the real coin. What would you guys do? Clean it of not? Thanks
Nic-a-date can bring out the date. I used it as a kid and completed most of the Buffalo set. However, that was too easy and caused me to lose interest in Buffs.
So the Nic-a-Date makes the date permanetly visable? I know cleaning the coin destroys much of the value, almost all to certain collectors, but if a no date is only 50 cents then wouldn't it still be worth it by chance if it was say any year before 1918. I know some of those in G-4 are still only $4-5 but some of thise dates even with a cleaned coinw ould be higher than 50 cents. And IMO you are not losing much value from a 50 cent coin if you clean it. You can only really lose 45 cents but gain a date! I dunno just a thought. Yeah I remember my first buffalo from circulation. Didn't think I got the correct change
Nic-a-date keeps the date visable, at least for a number of years. I have found old pieces that have been restored, but I don't know for how long. Hey if you find a 1916/1916 (double die) or a 1918/7 overdate then it is worth a lot more than the 50 cents, even restored. PCI has 'graded' or slabbed them in the past as a restored date. Good luck.
