After a long while of not looking through my general circulation coinage Danscos, I saw that many of my proof and mint state coins were starting to tone, so far I like the look, and they are not even silver, just cu-ni, but they are getting some nice crescents of blues and yellows. Just thought I would put it out there, maybe anyone else who was done this can post some pictures of their results, I would love to see
I have a dansco album of dimes that was toned when I bought it. It was one of my first and favorite silver collections and still is. A couple of them have full dark blue crescents with some lighter blues and magentas. There are a couple other toning like light violet and some greens. One coin in particular is the 1967 though. It isn't silver and has nice pearl like colors. I wish the set was complete past 1968 because the more modern coins are harder to find good toned examples of. I don't have any pics either.
I have a dansco jefferson nickel album that I put most of the nickels in 6 or 7 years ago. I have also noticed some toning, mostly light yellow toning. It's attractive, I'm happy with it.
My Kennedy halves have yellowed in the past 7-8 months.... don't much care for it. Wish they were that bright, white color they were originally...
My starte quarters, pulled from circulation as they were released, have that "gold" tone to them. Don't use yellow. Say gold. it's better when marketing.
As much as I got a chuckle out of your comment, I keep seeing yellow... I REALLY wish I shared the same feelings toward this "toning" as others, to me it just seems as though the coins are changing from their original look..
I just pulled out a GEM set of Roosevelt nickels my father left me and some coins are perfect as new, while other in the SAME case are rainbowed BIG TIME... strange why some toned a lot and others not at all. They've been sitting in the same case, same drawer, same house since the 50's...
So pulled out my Dansco 7070 after having it away for awile. I noticed that some of the dimes have begun to tone. They look great but I would rather that they don;t tone. Has anyone tried placing coins in a "kointain" prior to placing them in a dansco? Would they still fit in the holes?
No idea. I just know for coins I want to keep in albums, I have been going to Intercept Shield. I'll have to check my safe deposit box for how my IHCs have been as they have been in an Intercept album for a few years. (Will check in October due to business travel.) My Peace dollars have been in one for almost a year.
Humidity will affet this as well. If you do not like toning but like albums, my only suggestion would be to place it in as low of humidity as possible. I have seen Dansco's from the SW US with no toning, but here in the upper midwest one summer can tone the coins. I haven't tried kointain's, but not sure they would fit in the dansco.
As you can see, one coin toned and one right next to it not... these were all installed in the early to mid 60's and were in a drawer ever since (in a box)
I don't know why everybody is so hooked on Danscos. Those are the only albums people talk about on here. If you want your coins to tone, go ahead and use them. If you don't want them to tone, go with an Intercept Shield album and store them in a dark, cool, temp controlled environment. The Intercept shield albums are just as attractive, if not more so. I personally prefer the dark green look.
I have an intercept shield for my peace dollars and I don't think the construction is as good as that of the dansco. I do like the look of the dansco but might try another intercept shield. The only danso that has toned coins for me has been the 7070 type coin album. My Lincoln cents, peace dollars, jefferson nickels, frankies, and sacs are fine.
