Hello, Newer collector seeking advice on best way to keep coins for long term. I’m building uncirculated Franklin and ASE sets. What is the best method to keep coins to preserve condition? Thank you
I personally like the Danscos because they display the coins well and are fairly secure. They are a bit on the pricey side if you’re trying to stay on a budget.
Dansco albums look nice, but can tone coins darker over time. I have 6 Dansco albums and most of the coins have either turned darker or have a strange toned look to them. I would say 2X2 cardboard flips or plastic airtites. I use "Caps" pages for my airtites for my toned Canadian dimes, quarters and halves. looks great and protects the coins from getting scratched.
here is what they look like.... here is thread here on coin talk that has a American Silver Eagles page... link: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/coin-albums-your-thoughts.318548/#post-3113049
here are some dark(sorry) pics of my toned Canandian cents, dimes, quarters, halves in airtites in "Caps" pages... I really like these "Caps" pages. My coins do not get scratches in airtites. In Dansco albums it is possible to scratch the surface of the coins with the clear plastic slides that go over the top of the coins.
Interesting, I have a few airtites but did not know about the pages. If a coin tones over time will that hurt the value of the coin?
That is quite the loaded question. There are those that love collecting toned coins. Then there are those that regard toning as damage. Thing is, when you put a coin in a Dansco you are inviting toning to occur. Problem is, you cannot predict whether or not that toning will be eye appealing or ugly black and unappealing. It is a crap shoot at best.
Yes. Ugly toning is penalized. Attractive toning is rewarded. This is the "eye appeal" part of the grade.
Neither. This would be better; I was wondering if you can pop the capsules in and out several times without fear of cracking the pages?
Only if it is turns to dark. Some coins toned nicely and attractive. It depends what they were stored in before ???
I have done it twice on some holes that I upgraded on certain dates. I fear that I would not do it a 3rd time in the same hole. Once I complete my toned sets I might just buy new pages to have them set in the new pages forever with out the fear of them falling out of the page. This is just an after thought.
