Question are Dansco albumns and slip cases any good? How good are the slip cases againts toning? What if a coin is toned will it continue to tone in an albumn with a slip case?
Yes they will. Intercept Shield albums and proper storage is the only one I know of that will prevent toning. Proper storage is really the key, but as a general rule albums are a bad idea for a couple of reasons.
If by display you mean leaving it out in the open where people can see it, then forget about it. Nothing you do will prevent the toning. But if by display you mean taking it out now n then to show it to someone and properly storing it the rest of the time then I would do this. Two choices - 1 - get an Intercept Shield album and use it. 2 - place every coin in an Air-Tite brand holder and get an album that holds Air-Tites. In both cases, store the album properly when not looking at it.
thanks for the advice. an intercept shield album is around $33. I'll sale dansco on ebay. who makes an album that holds air tights? Also what is your recommendation on proper storage of the album? Seal in air tight plastic bag?
Don't get me wrong I can be a fan of the tone. I really would like a nice rainbow toned peace dollar, but hard to find and mucho dinero. It's just that I have a nice, well I think beautiful, almost complete set of white lusterous ms-62 to ms -65 peace dollars. They are my babies and I don't want them to get hurt if you know what I mean.
By the way how are some of the major toned coin dealers on ebay? They have some slabbed stuff, but I'm not so sure some of it hasn't been doctored AT.
If you want to keep them pristine, then Intercept or air-tites. There are actually several ways to store airtights and different types of them. Just type air-tite on a google prompt or just type it here on the Search link in CoinTalk. You'll get plenty of hits. Those solutions are a bit (but not that much) more than Dansco, but heck, total cost is probably what you might have paid for ONE of those Peace Dollars. So bullet-biting time??
We have had literally hundreds of threads about coin storage. Just do a forum search on the word storage. You can also check the Numismatic Resources section - there's stuff in there too. You can buy Air-Tite albums at - JP's Corner
Heres some horrible examples of what to stay away from when buying coins on Ebay. All obviously artificially toned and very ugly.
Well I'm new to coin talk so I didn't know if it was proper to call some onw out onto the carpet by name, but Peacock is one that I question. Even some of the slabbed coins look AT. Are the tone doctors that good? Really who can really get that many wild natural toned coins in one place to sale.:hatch:
Now, tellme, Why would a John Adams dollar coin be toned so soon after its introduction if it wasn't artificially treated? Bruce
I put all my coins in Whitman Classic Albums. Each one is then put into a zip lock freezer type bag with as much air as possible pushed out. Prior to zip lock bags I used just big or large plastic bags. I've been doing this for well into the 50 or so years that I can remember. Not exactly sure when I started the plastic bag stuff though but it was a long, long time ago. So far coins from when I started collecting in 1943 to present have not toned, corroded, stained, etc at all. Many, many of them look just the way they were when I first put them into an album. Possibly in the next few hundred years they may start to tone and if so I'll let you know. Other than that I would suggest regardless of how you store your coins just find a way to avoid long exposures to the air.
