Dansco/Airtite album for Silver proofs (quarters)...

My original plan was to put together a date set of Silver Proof State quarters in a Dansco album (7146). Although I got the silver guard slipcover, I've come to the realization that the slipcover would probably do a better job of protecting regular silver coins, and this combination might not work for highly polished, mirrored silver proofs. -But that's a guess, can anyone say how well silver proof coins hold up in Dansco albums (with the slipcover)? I'm guessing the more probable use of this combination might be with Silver Eagle proofs (as opposed to the silver quarter proofs), and maybe that would give me an idea. Really any silver proof coin in a Dansco album actual experience would be helpful (not what anyone "thinks" will happen).

Plan B would be to try one of those Airtite albums. This would have more protection (due to the coins being in airtites and then put into the pages and then into the album), but I've never gotten one of these and don't know what the quality is (compared to regular albums like Danso, etc.). I suppose if one is looking for tarnish/tone protection (and to me there's no point in tarnished proofs, kinda kills the whole point IMHO), the airtite album is the best way, unless someone can say that the Dansco plan would be fine.

Pity I already have the Dansco album, but I suppose I could find a use for it. The silver slipcase wouldn't be needed for just slapping in circulated clad examples. Bit of a waste.

I can't help you here but I would be interested in what you find out. I am putting together 3 sets of 1992- present silver statehood and regular design quarters and I have to put them seperate from the rest of the sets in the Whitman albums. So finding a good way to preserve them is wide open in my case.
I was considering airtites in some kind of holder but haven't decided.

The best way to achive your particular goal of no toning - an Intercept Shield album.

Well, there is an album that holds nine airtites on a page (I suppose it doesn't really matter that it isn't done by year) and they have a specific one for the quarters with the name of each state imprinted on the cards. That one (complete with the pages which are usually not included) is $18.45 @ valleycoin. You'd stil have to get the actual airtites for each of the coins (~$16). My concern with this album is that the pages are plastic and I'm not sure how flimsy or durable this set-up is, as compared to the Dansco-like albums which feel very soild.

This would be verses the Intercept @ ~$27.00, though I'm not sure how the Intercept is much different than the Dansco. It's pages may be treated with a similar substance that Dansco's slipcover is treated with. That might be the main difference between the Dansco, but if not, then both probably have a silver protective slipcover and thus I don't know why one would be better than another.

The Air-tites albums are actually very solid. The individual air-tite holders are solid and then placed in a page that is a combination of cardboard and felt. Once inserted in these pages, they are then placed in a thick plastic slip page. These albums are then placed in a holder, providing very good protection to your coins.

I have a number of these and find them very solid. I also like the look of silver/clad high grade coins against the black page.

I use the Dansco album for my kids circulated state quarter series.
With white linen or cotton gloves, I use airtites and airtite storage boxes that fit into my safe deposit box for my gold coin collection.
and the rest of the collection, the living collection, is handed by hand with me and the kids for it is nice to hold coins in the flesh and to carry them about in pockets as well.

Yeah I like that look as well, but just wasn't sure how they were constructed. Thanks for the feedback.

Now, does anyone have any experience with silver proofs in a Dansco album (with slipcover)?

    Proofs in Dansco

I have just removed the more valuable quarters from my Dansco album with slip cover always in use. For a short period I had my Dansco's in the safe without ziplocks being under the wrong impression :desk:that the ziplocks had PVC. Now all Dansco albums back in ziplock with dessicant, Reynolds Handyvac-vac sealed bags (comes with a little machine that sucks out the air) and new copper pennies surrounding to take oxidation hit (I remove these when they get ugly or tone). I have removed many of those quarters because of noted toning after about 6 months to one year in the albums. They toning is attractive, but I am not sure I want it. I think the toning occurred when they were out of the ziplock and I subsequently had purchased new shelves that were made of particle board and carpet. They smelled like new car smell . So I can't be sure what the cause of toning was. I now have a room a/c installed, tons of dessicant, sealed my safe better with foam sealing the door. Not sure if I should buy Intercept album or put in air-tites or put in Intercept 2x2's? For now I put the expensive quarters (Choice BU and above) in Intercept 2x2's. And yes the proofs have toned and have that cloudy look (it varies though and some look fine). Humidity in safe is 45-50% and working to decrease with more dessicants. In the ziplocks the humidity is less as the dessicants never seem to turn "pink" forever so it has to be low humidity in there. Hope that helps. I myself am lost:eek:.

I'm currently debating about putting "regular" clad as well as silver proofs in either Dansco or Intercept. Toning is, of course, an issue.

But something that worries me even more is that these coins are going to get bopped around occasionally since it is an album. What if they rub against the plastic sleeves? Or if you have to take one out and slide that sleeve all the way in and out.

That concern with "regular" albums is almost more of a concern to me than toning.

Dprice: Off topic but IMO, you should check out getting larger desicant packs. I don't know how large your safe is but somewhere like wizardcoinsupply, offers silica gel packs that are supposed to be good for 33 Cu. Ft. for 10 bucks. I bought one, which is way over-kill for what it needs to do, but it keeps the humidity at 20%.

They also sell a larger one that is supposed to cover 60 Cu. Ft. I too used to use lots of desicant packs but I got tired of them being everywhere.

    Dessicants

    To Vess1,
Yes, everyway I have coins stored is surrounded by ziplocks and dessicants and most now in "Handi-vac" bags that air sucked out by this little sucker device that comes with the bags. I also have 3 large dessicants in the open space of the safe (two that are battery rechargeable and another that is oven heated and will add more soon). I am debating not removing the coins for fear of scratching the proofs, but I can't decide at this point. I am right there with Samjimmy in the concerns about the albums. I definitely hairlined and scratched some of the proofs putting them in. But I eventually learned how to do it without damage (under a 20x loope I am sure there is evidence of the contact). I use either ziplock bags or the part of the 2x2 flip that is plastic (tore it out) to put on the face of the coin to push it in. If I had to do it all over again, I would probably would put all the coins in Air-tites and place in Eagle albums sheets. "Caronlina Gent" does this and places the sheets in Littleton folders. I'd like to see a photo of this and I replied to see if he could do so. Don't know if that helps as I definitely do not have the answer. Display verses preservation?

I would be far more frightened of hairlining them in albums than anything else. I have left all of my proofs in the original packaging for that exact reason. I don't want them toned either, so I store them in the proper environment, but I choose not to place them into holders other than what they are already in. IMO the more moving, the more chance that something will happen.
