I was looking through my Dansco 8166 today...it's the Kennedy Half with Proof book and I noticed something that I thought was odd. It includes spaces for both types of 1979-S Proof...the Type 1 and 2 mint mark varieties. However, it does not include the same thing for the 1981-S...it only has one slot. I would have thought if they were going to recognize one...they would have recognized the other. The book has 2 empty slots at the end...so there is plenty of room (I will probably hand label one of those and make it for the 1981-S Type 2 at the end of the album). Any idea why they would have omitted the 1981-S varieties but included the 1979-S varieties?
The CPG describes the 81-S Types I & II as "not easily distinguished" from one another. Maybe that has something to do with it. Chris
It's true...the changes on the 1979 are more dramatic than on the 1981. The 1979-S Type 1 is a filled S while the Type 2 is a Clear S. They 1981 Type 1 is the same MM as the 79 Type 2...but they made a subtle change so there are two different design. I have always personally held the varieties in equal regards (in my head)...but you are right, the 1979 is much more apparent. Maybe it's that simple. The SBA book has both though...but the SBA 1981-S Type 2 is the key in the set. That's not the case with the Kennedy.
