While at my LCS yesterday, I was rummaging through a bin of miscellaneous coins when I found this: an 1875S 20c piece. It has a hole through it, I know, but I couldn't resist at the price it was, and I needed an example for my type set. The details of the coin aren't too bad - my photographs don't do Lady Liberty much justice, but the letters on the shield are all visible, but worn. If it weren't for the hole, I would say it would grade VG-F. But here is my question: is it worth any premium with this hole? I know if it weren't there, I would have a coin of decent value, but is it worth any premium over melt in this shape? Thank you, all!
Your coin has at least Ch VF details and might even be EF. The twenty-cent piece is the only regular issue US coin where LIBERTY on the shield is raised instead of incuse and this can make traditional methods of grading coins inappropriate for this series.
You can't abuse a 20-center enough to make it worth only melt, unless you actually melt it. That's a great find, one I would've snatched in a heartbeat. Congratulations!
Awesome! So it looks like I got a pretty good deal: I picked it up for $7! Thank you for all your advice.
Neither did I. Gotta love folks like Tom, who randomly invade and infuse their most notable knowledge........
Nowhere near $40 with that huge hole in it. I might buy it for $10 and try to get $20....it is a huge problem coin with the hole.
