I've been watching 8 Reales coins for a little while because I'd like to have one. Not really interested in a shipwreck coin (I already have one of those to satisfy that urge). This one on eBay closing today looks interesting to me...fairly low wear, 1700's date. But what about the damage at the rim? Or is it from a flawed planchet as indicated by the seller? Any other thoughts about this one? http://www.ebay.com/itm/151357296810?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT Thanks. Rob
The notes says holed. Do you see a hole in the coin? Have you bought coins from this particular person?
No I have not bought from them. And I didn't see a hole other than the rim issue--do you? I have not yet received a reply to a question about it (only sent this morning).
I would agree that it is a planchet flaw on the rim, but even so it is severe enough to render the coin ungradeable. I also believe the coin has been harshly cleaned, so it is a problem coin for 2 reasons, not just 1. Because of that, I would never buy this coin. The date/mint is common enough, it is not hard to find them in nice condition and problem free. So I believe you would be much better served to pass and look for another example.
Thanks, guys. Here is the seller's reply to my email about the "hole" and rim damage: "It's a mistake. I have another holed 8 reales up and didn't notice it has copied over to this listing. The only "problem" with this particular coin is the nick on the rim, which is quite common for these coins. Otherwise, it is a beautiful example with well defined lines."
