Anyone know that this Civil War Token is worth? I bought one like it this weekend, but in only good to VG condition. Thanks Frank
Hello The Other Frank, That cwt is id 191/443a, and is a common variety with an R-2 rarity rating (2000-5000 known). Values in Kanzinger's 2002 book, which are becoming outdated, but still fairly close for the commons, are listed as $13 in F/VF, $17 in XF and $25 in UNC.
cwtokenman: Thank you very much. I just picked up 5 CWT's this weekend, and I am trying to id them. Frank
You are very welcome Frank. I hope that you are using the Fuld's hardback books and not the softback ones or Rulau's Standard Catalog. Feel free to post some pics of the others.
Just curious, what is wrong with Rulau's Standard Catalog. I was going to buy one of these, as I am only a novice, but I would like to hear your input.
Rulau's Standard Catalog is a very good reference for what it covers, aside from the cwts. I posted a quote from the Rulau catalog in the "new cwt" thread, but in case you missed it, basically, Rulau only lists the most common variety for each merchant or patriotic die used. He did not want the cwt section to become an overly dominant section in his book. As it is, the cwt section takes up about 140 pages of the 1200 page 4th edition. Even though a given merchant may have issued over 200 varieties of cwts, Rulau will only list the most common one. If you have a scarce variety of a cwt, and you utilize Rulau's catalog for making the identification, it will lead you to believe your token is more common (and likely less valuable) than it actually is.
