Since the beginning I have gone through a few different types of housing for my small size notes. I've used a large folder meant to house bills but the tops of the sleeves did not cover the entire bill. Also you cant view the back of the bill. I can get single hard plastic sleeves but then I'm stuck with a bunch of singles. My local coin shop recommended using thin plastic sheets (reminiscent of the old baseball card pages) but they are very flimsy and am fearful that the bending could damage them. So recently I have limited my purchases to notes that have been graded so they are in their own sealed holders. What could you suggest?

there are mylar currency pages. The ones i use are 4 pocket, and fit small size US currency perfectly. They are semi rigid, so there is some stability to them, but will also bend and not crack or break when needed. i use CHHM from this site for sleeves, and ACP-2 from the same site on this page for the 4 pocket pages.

Interesting...I've been thinking of replacing the holders and pages in my collection as some of them are quite old...like close to 30 years old for some of them!

Question...do you put your notes in a holder and then put the holders in the pages or do you store your notes directly in the 4 pocket pages?

im picky :D i place them in holders and then the page. I do it so if i need/want to take the note out of the page i can do so without worries. The down side is i use a whole lot more of the sleeves then i want to buy lol

Here is what I did, I bought sleeves for large size notes (I use them for small size notes though) and bought PVC free pages that fit those sleeves. Here are links to the exact same thing I bought and I really like how it turned out:

They make sleeves for the small sized notes, but I like how the large size sleeve fits perfectly into the page. The sleeve is tight enough to hold the note just fine. Here is a picture of one of my albums. I just use a normal binder.

CamaroDMD, your taking quite the chance with those sleeves from that auction. At that price, and considering they 'dont' tell you what material they are, i would be willing to bet they are PVC.

The auction for the pages says they are made form Polypropylene. While i have not heard or seen anything too negative about the chemical, but i am not completely sold on it either. I prefer to stick with Mylar-D or Prolar myself. It can be a bit more expensive, but considering the prices of the stuff we put in the sleeves and pages - the added cost of Mylar/Prolar is worth it IMHO.

From what I have read, Polypropylene is a same plastic to use. It may not be as inert as mylar...but I haven't heard of people having any problems with it. It is a completely different molecule than PVC with different properties.

it may not be as inert? it either is or it isnt :) and that is why i use Mylar. Take a look 50 years ago when folks used nothing but PVC. They all thought it was the wonder plastic. These days we know it causes issues on both coins and currency. The only difference is we know Polypropylene is not completely inert, where on PVC it took us 50 or years to realize. So you know there is something that leeches out of Polypropylene. When it leeches out, where is it going to go but on your notes?

I wont knock your decision, as its yours to make :) but for a few cents more per sleeve or whatever, wouldnt it be safer to buy the mylar?

Need to revisit this topic briefly...just wondering which sleeves are better...the top loader type or the type that are open at the ends with a 'flap' that folds over the top. The JakesMP site has both.

Not sure which I prefer...was thinking of using a combination where the top one on each page would be side load since the top loaders stick up a bit to high and the remaining 3 on each page would be top loading.

the choice of top loaded or side loader is a personal prefferance. As long as the type of material is safe, then pick which you would like better.

On jakesmp site, i dont recall the side loaders with the top flap that folds over being a safe material. Whats the link to that product?

Can't get to the site right now because it's blocked at work (almost seems random what they decide to block here), but if you go the the site it's the 'Museum' type ones. I've used both and sort of prefer the ones with the top flap. The only downside to them is unless you try REALLY hard to avoid it, when you go to flip the flap over the note, it can wind up scraping against the note. Doesn't seem to do any harm, but not something you'd want to do repeatedly!

here is the page i think you mean. It does say they are made from polyester. That is what Myalr and Prolar is made from, so it should be safe. I never looked too close at these becuase they are only 4 mil thick. I like the sturdier kind myself :)

Yes, those are them. I have some of my notes in holders like that that are probably 20+ years old. Here's the back of one of those notes in a similar type holder. The 'foldover' part looks a little smaller than the ones on that site though...

They actually work well for some of my 'notes with character' which can be tough to insert into a top loading sleeve once they've lost most of their original paper body. ;)

I also like that they fit into the vinyl/mylar pages much better (ie, they don't stick out of the pocket) and once in the page, the note is pretty much 'sealed' on all 4 sides.

Only downside is you still need to be careful inserting the note so you don't scrape it with the flap as you fold it over and you get that unsightly line/seam on the reverse of the note where the holder folds over.

Sorry, north49guy. i cant say if they are safe or not... but i will say i wouldnt use them! They say they are made from plastic, which in my 'assumption' would be PVC. I would email them to make sure the material type. If it is PVC stay way. If its anything other then a polyester type material... the choice is yours to make if you use them or not.

In the end though, i wouldnt use any type of plastic. Mylar or Prolar is a type of polyester - and is not considered plastic, and is the only material i will put my collection in!
