Something I've noticed in almost 10 years of coin buying and surfing on eBay is the "Curl Base 2" 1827 Halves are 10x as rare (or more) as "Square Base 2" examples. Also, the Rarity Ratings don't reflect this disparity. Anyone else notice this? Take Care Ben
Bone, I see tons of square base 2's. Maybe one out 9 or 10 are the curl bases. I think you are right about this, but I've been wrong many a time. :hatch: :hatch:
OOPS, my bad there is one, but it's listed as one of those funky Heritage Auction items. 1 out of 29, hmmm... B
For whatever it's worth, back near the end of '04 I did a little study on Bust Half dollars. I built a spreadsheet on graded examples from the combined population reports of both PCGS & NGC. I only recorded examples grading AU50 and above. But among those that I did record there are only 14 1827 curled base 2 examples. In contrast, there are 69 suare base examples. To put it into better perspective, that is from among 21,000 total examples in my spreadsheet alone. Not quite 10 to 1 Bone, but almost 5 to 1.
Ben: Interesting catch, too bad that I didn't see this note before I went to the coin show yesterday. But, I'll add it to the list
I just checked, and I have two 1827, one is square base 2, in F-12, O-112, R-3 the other is curled 2, VF-30, O-119, R-3. Perhaps they should update the Rarity ratings on these.
I suspect the BHNC and Bust Half Fever are going to update their RR scales shortly. Last update (as you know) is 2004. Take Care Ben
