Agreed that it looks fake. You have to remember that the nickel planchet (meant to strike 5 cent coins) is smaller and thinner than the planchet for a quarter. Therefore, the dies, which are set for a larger, thicker planchet, will not come together as closely on a thinner planchet and will normally show a weaker strike. That said, however, this piece is showing planchet flaking on both sides of the piece, and, in addition, is showing what seems to be high thin rims. It is the 'wire' rims that concern me the most. Not very likely with a smaller planchet. Since the rims are formed as a thicker planchet is struck and the metal is forced in an outward direction, forcing it into the 'third die', that forms the reeding on the edge. the only answer is, hmmmmmm............. it could be real, or someone banged the edges, or it could be fake.
