The mint has started using these blister packs to package some of their coins like the presidential dollars. It seems like a perfectly good way to keep them over time. I buy 10 sets of the presidental golden dollar coins each year which I will eventually put sets with the proofs. I'm just wondering if these blister packs are a good way to store the coins until I am ready to put the sets together? Any thoughts?
For me the jury is still out on that packaging. It hasn't been used for long enough to get a read on how well they protect the coins. Of course, by the time we find out, there could be some damage I have kept the hard plastic frames from proof sets intact until I decide which way to go on those. My guess would be the hard plastic frames are better that the blister packs. Just my opinion with no facts to back it up.
I never had any problems with similar packaging. They used the same kind of thing back '94, '97, '01 and I belive all of the Coin & Currency sets following. As long as you store them properly you should be fine. One other thing to consider, all of the dollar coins since the Sackys were introduced are coated with an anti-tarnishing agent. That should help too.
I believe the coin itself is surrounded by a plastic that is PVC free so there should be no issues there. I am not sure how safe it is from the environment though, it appears to be fairly well sealed for most normal conditions but I would still keep it away from damp or humid areas.
