I can detect several Latin letters on this silver tiny coin. It's worn and has 2 holes within, but I think it could still be identifiable. There's also a figure of a small cross on reverse, making it possibly a Crusader coin. It weighs only 1 g.
I can only guess you may be right... Perhaps a few of us that focus on 'Crusader' coins will chime in with their opinion.
It´s definitely a coin from Venice. It reminds me of a Ducato (for the type) but weight isn´t that of a Ducato. Look at these: http://www.acsearch.info/search.htm...s=1¤cy=usd&thesaurus=1&order=0&company=
I might understand that this coin is not ancient. It dates back to the 18th or 17th century. The letters E N seem to be parts of the word VENETUS (Venice). @Pellinore : I thought these were marks of lines due to PMD and not a castle. Anyway here's a better scan of the obverse at 600 dpi.
You are right, that's ancient scribbling... On the reverse there's the Venetian flagpole, that divides it in two halves. I think I can read the letters HIE, that might be Latin Hieronymus, or in Italian Girolamo. There's only one Doge with that first name, Girolamo Priuli. Just exploring possibilities...
