Hi, I am a new member and the owner of a single coin by inheritance. I have no idea what it is except it might look like a crusader coin. I need help big time to find out what it is and what it might be worth. It is very thin and measures 37mm in diameter. It seems to test for 9K gold. Thank you in advance, hope the pics assist in identification! You say it tests for 9k gold - tested by who and how ? I ask because it appears to be a cast forgery and made of base metal with a gold wash on the surface only.
I did an acid test by rubbing the edge on a testing stone. I deal with jewelry a lot. Could it be 9K gold and a forgery?
I tested the edge with a rubbing stone. Anyway, I was told by someone else that it is a "jeton" which at least would make it not a forgery. They also think it's brass, so agree that it isn't gold.
It looks like a French Jetton. It does look like it may have been guilded at some point, probably a while after being struck. Fairly common but still an early, interesting piece.
