I have never sent "crossover" slabs to either PCGS or NGC so I would like some input from our terrific membership. I recently purchased several coins housed in ICG and ANACS slabs. Should I remove them and send them in as "raw" or leave them housed in their current holders? This was a case of "buy the coin not slab." I really liked the coins. Which way of submission would yield the most accurate grade. Do TPG's try to "one up" their competitors by assigning lower grades or are they impartial? Does anyone have any direct experience with this situation?
Assuming you really want the coins in a different slab then weigh the following: What is the down side if the other TPG doesn't grade the coin? If you have cracked it out of the first slab then there could be a down-side. Some folks say that one of the TPGs in Florida tends to not cross coins because their standards are higher. I have not found any instance where they paid any attention to the slab. They look at the coin. I recommend that you feel free to cross cross cross. I had a PCI slabbed error coin cross to NGC two grades higher one time.
I would suggest you leave them in the original holder when sending the coins in for cross grading. Note your minimum grade as the one indicted on the original slab as acceptable. If it is determine to be less than what on the existing slab they will return it to you in the original slab.
There are some that believe raw gets you a better grade, but me personally I think leaving them in the original slab is the best. That is what I did for the two I wanted crossed - plus I did not list a minimum grade. Both crossed at the same grade.
do you think they one up each other by giving the coin a higher grade, or do the one up each other by giving the coin one lower grade. One of the TPG's claims to be the hardest. Seems like they might want to flex their muscles/opinion on a lesser service. I'd leave them in the slab and note that you only want to cross over if it gets the same or higher grade.
If there is a possiblity that it could come back NG or Details I'd leave it in but if there's not much down side then I'd break it out. But remember I've never sent in one coin to a TPGing company.
