"Crosslet 4 Stemless" 1804 Half Cent? Naw, just another Counterfeit...

    A fair amount of work done to this one:

    I created combination images to the known source coin for counterfeit draped bust half cents, an 1804 C-6 "spiked chin" (ref my Coin Week article!) on the left, a genuine crosslet 4 stemless C-12 example on the right:

    Part of the spiked chin was removed and the date worked on; matches much of the C-6 on the left, not the C-12 on the right. Date is bad to both!

    And the reverses:

    Again no match to the "stemless" but matches the C-6 die chip, letter relationships and has a "stub" where the stem was removed; interestingly the fraction and fraction bar were altered.

    I notified the seller and made an offer to add to my education set...
