I have these two Campgates and would like to know more about them. What are they worth? Is there much of a market for them, or are they a dime a dozen? The first seems to be in better condition than the second. Thank you. [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG]
the first one is Antioch , first officina A SMANTA can be read in the exergue however i cant figure out the exergue in the second , maybe another oriental mint they are not worth much i think the first one is 4-6$ while the second without the exergue visible could be worth 2-3$ regards
I would think Randi is right, especially on the first one. Normally a Crispus would not be worth much for a common issue, but camp gate collectors are a different breed. There are many collectors of this reverse, and I think the first one would sell for more than a few dollars on Ebay.
Thank you all for the information you've provided. I've learned a lot more about these coins from here than I have scouring the internet. With the low value described above, looks like I'll be holding on to them. Thank you all for your help.
Sorry Randy about the spelling. I also agree they are very interesting coins. There is a debate as to what they signify. Campgate is what they are called, but many believe they represent city gates, since a military camp would never have stone construction unless a permanent camp.
