I had an TV that I didn't need anymore and was trying to sell it for US coins on Craigslist. A buyer contacted me and said he had 150 silver dimes. When I expressed interest, he said that he would let me have his ex-wife's coin collection because it just sat around and made his son sad everytime he saw it. He wanted to just get rid of it. Other than the dimes, I didn't really know what else he had. He asked for the TV and $200 in cash. Not knowing what dates he had, I knew that the silver melt value for silver dimes is about $2 each so it seemed like a good deal (although I am not looking to melt). I went to his house about 40 miles away and was shocked at all he was willing to give me for that price. I ended up trading the TV (about $100 in value) and $200 in cash to the guy and he gave me the following: 1884 Morgan Dollar 1867 3-Cent Piece 1867 2-Cent Piece 3 SBA 1979 Dollars 2001 One Ounce Silver Eagle Dollar 6 Barber Dimes (from 1899-1916) 55 Mercury Dimes (from 1916-1945) 73 Silver Roosevelt Dimes (from 1946-1964) 241 Jefferson Nickels (from 1938-1964 including 22 War Nickles) 1 Buffalo Nickel (1930) 786 Wheat Pennies (38 1909/1910's, 43 1920's, 84 1930's, 264 1940's, and 355 1950's) (Semi-Key Dates included were 1909 VDB and 1912 D) 14 Canadian Pennies (from 1920-1965) 1 Canadian Dime (1973) 1 Norwegian Krone Coin (1965)...no idea what that is! 2 Uncirculated Jefferson Nickel Rolls (one roll is 2005 Bison and other roll is 2005 Ocean View) 8 Sets of the Westward Journey Commemorate Nickle Set Also, he gave me two sterling silver spoons, a pocket knife, a class ring and what looks like a wedding ring (I doubt if the diamond is real but I'll check it out). Wow! I told him that if he has any friends who also has a coin collection they want to get rid of to let me know! I tallied everything up and it looks like I came away with about $400-500 worth of coins (numismatic value...not melt value). Not a bad investment.
Make sure to check the Canadian cents for 1922, 1923, or 1925...those bring a pretty decent premium. (I figured you'd have plenty of folks checking in on the US stuff.) Nice, nice haul. Gotta love those deals when they happen.
