Wanted to share this craigslist ad with all of you. I bought these coins 6 years ago at a swap meat and i dont wanna get rid of em but i need the money. Steel Pennies They are called the Silver pennies The Government needed copper for shell casings and bullets for the war effort so they produced only steel pennies for three years. I have all three years. STATE NICKELS ( COPPER AND SILVER ) 1942-45 Made from actual silver they are worth more than there face value. MINT STATE GUN SHELL-CASE COPPER CENTS 1944-46 The Steel Cents were unpopular so the Government decided to reuse the shell casings from the war to make shell case copper pennies.
Ok so he never emailed me any pics but did update the ad with two pics below is the link so you can look for yourselfs. http://visalia.craigslist.org/clt/2514880765.html
If the war nickels are in gem-bu condition the coins may be worth the $100. Most war nickels look terrible and aren't worth more than the price of silver but every now and then you come across a really nice one that can go for top dollar. I don't think his are gem-bu's but ya never know.
WWIII coinage If you look at http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/13131-world-war-two-emergency-coins you should see exactly what he has. This looks to be a put together collection that was sold at sometime either already "complete" and not needing you to do anything except hang it up, or where you got the coins separately (probably from the same company that sold you the holder and frame) and put them in, sort of like a subscription. Looks like all the coins may be uncirculated or close to that, but were making money for the people that put this out. Let me know your opinion if its different from mine. Guess the value would be whatever the coins individually are worth, possibly uncirculated (but probably not high quality MS 63-69)
Ditto These sets were typically put together with EF or better examples making the group worth $50 or so. And there are several expensive varieties in the coins' year ranges. I wouldn't immediately be so dismissive of the offer (but not for $100) and if were in the seller's area I might want to at least take a look.
Weren't there some error 1944's? I haven't seen any in person, but I remember reading that some are out there.
After seeing the updated pics I changed my mind about it, Don't think I'd pay $100 for it but it does look nicely kept. He isn't to far away either, Im in his area every weekend. maybe i'll go check out some of the near by flea market/ swap meats that he may have been to.
I have heard of them as well, but have never seen one. I heard one sold for $100,000, but I don't have any facts on that. I would think they would be in the same boat as the '43 copper cent, extremely rare.
