Just for Aidan LOL here are a couple from Rhodesia well one is Southern Rhodesia 1947 3d 1964 2/6, 25c Was quite pleased to find these in a recentt small lot along with 3 nice Nigerian. De Orc :kewl:
Steve, that Rhodesian 1/2 Crown was allowed to remain in circulation after the change over to decimal currency in 1970,which is why it is dual-denominated & so worn. The only issue of Rhodesian 25c. coins was issued in 1975.I have got both of these in my collection. The Southern Rhodesian 3d. is commonly known as a Tickey, just like the South African 3d. & 2-1/2c. coins were.I have got most dates of the Southern Rhodesian 3d. Aidan.
Steve those coins are great, a sable antelope and spears! I may have to go poking around for some of those. Thanks for showing them.
Thanks guy's but Aidan not sure what you mean by worn? it is in quite good condition bit dirty but hardly worn! De Orc
Steve, you are right about THAT particular Rhodesian 1/2 Crown, but a majority of the ones that I've seen are very well worn. Did you know that Rhodesia was the first of only 2 British Commonwealth countries to use Arnold Machin's portrait of the Queen on pre-decimal coins? The other country was Gambia. Aidan.
Vlad, are you becoming a convert to British Commonwealth numismatics? You will find it an enjoyable area of numismatics to specialise in. Aidan.
I bought a Rhodesian 4-coin proof set in 1964 or 1965 by mail direct from them. It came in a nice case. I still have it.
Willy, can you please post some photos of your Rhodesian Proof set? There was one issued in 1966 that comes in a black case with the Reserve Bank of Rhodesia's name & logo on the top. This contains 3 gold coins - 10/-,1 Pound,& 5 Pounds.Any other Rhodesian Proof set is actually extremely rare. The gold coins were issued to commemorate the 1st. Anniversary of the Unilateral Declaration of Independence. Aidan.
Well picked up a few more today, a few in a bit of a state but will do as space fillers for now :smile 1954 1/2d 1936 1d very damaged 1944 1d 1951 1d 1949 3d bent 1952 3d 1955 3d 1964 6d/5c 1964 1/- 10c 1964 2/- 20c De Orc :kewl:
My Rhodesian proof set contained the 1964 6 pence, 1 shilling, 2 shilling, and half-crown. The coins all have Queen Elizabeth on them. The "SAM" on the case refers to the South African Mint which struck it. The case is about 6" x 2-1/4" x 1" (15cm x 6cm x 2cm).
Additional information: I bought the 4-coin set in 1964 by mail order from either Rhodesia or South Africa. Even if I had the money, I could not have bought a gold-coin set. Back then importing a gold coin into the US was illegal.
Willie, that is very nice.Have you looked up the price for the Rhodesian Proof sets in the back of the Rhodesian chapter of Krause? The prices will really floor you.The gold coins came out in 1966,not 1964. Aidan.
Rhodesia 4-coin proof set 1964 This US Ebay seller got US $50.00 for one on December 8, 2006. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280055720777 He has nice pictures of the case/box. "Mintage of only 2,060 Sets!" What does Krause say?
Krause Rhodesia 1964 4-coin Proof Set price Today at the library, I checked a copy of the Krause Catalog of World Coins, 1999 26th edition, and it shows on page 1871 the 1964 Rhodesia Proof Set (4) valued at $50. There are some other years worth more.
It would be interesting to find out what the price will be on the Rhodesian 1964 Proof set in the 2008 Krause. Aidan.
