My Friday coin shop visit yielded these two pieces.I'm constantly surprised with what this place comes up with. Charles I shilling:this one is a little bigger than a US half..a huge coin with an unfortunately weak strike on the portrait but picked up for $22. Philip II Sollease correct me if I have any info on the holder wrong.I sometimes rely on the description put on the cardboard 2X2 until I can do further research.I can tell you it also said "Belgium".Got it for $20. I love hammered coins! :hammer:
I do as well...so often they are rubbed out in the protrait (or weak strike)... If you like hammered coins, our metal detecting eastern european MArcus Aurilius found what has to be one of the nicest I have seen the other day of Elizabeth I imagine finding this in or around you backyard
Mikjo0,that English 1/- has a Crowned Portcullis mintmark, which indicates that this was struck when the Tower Mint was under the control of the King (prior to 1642). Aidan.
Mikjo0,you can find it at the top of the shield on the reverse,& at the start of the King's title at the top on the obverse.Being a hammered coin, both sides don't match up to one another in terms of alignment. Aidan.
Vlad, where's the reference to Bosnia-Hercegovina in relation to an Elizabethan English 6d.? I don't see any. Aidan.
