This coin crossed my desk the other day and for some reason this piece stuck out in my mind as being something that might be better... but I could totally be thinking of something else. It's counterstamped CWT which I firstly thought "Civil War Token" but I'm not sure when they started being referred to as that. I wouldn't think they were referred to as that until later... but I don't know. Is this some sort of 3 cent civil war token? Anyone seen this before?

Boy, that's a good one. I don't ever recall coming across a counter stamp like this. I'm sure it's an interesting story , if it can be traced. I'm sure CWT will weigh in on this , if he every comes around again.

It's not a Civil War token LostDutchman, but you might be right about the "3". There are known counterstamps with other denominations punched over the "one cent" apparently to increase its value for use in some commercial establishment. "CWT" is likely the initials of the proprietor or the name of the business it could be redeemed at. If I would have to guess, I'd say there's a good chance it would be good for an "adult beverage." The star could represent the name of the place where it could be redeemed, such as the "Star Hotel" or something similiar. Whatever it all means, it definately predates the Civil War because the wear on the coin and the stamps are so heavy. It looks to have been stamped when the coin was fairly new. There's a lot of history there, but this one would be tough to track down. I like it though, it's a nice old historical piece.

BTW, and not looking at any books, it looks like an early 1830's large cent to me.
