I found a 1963 penny with a counterstamp on it. It is a star with a "n" inside and is placed just in front of Lincolns face. How do I find out who put it there and how much it might be worth? Any help appreciated!
First, welcome to the neighborhood @Joan Montana ! There are some people who collect these, but what I don't understand is why they collect those that can be easily made at home using a set of letter & number punches which can be purchased in the retail market. As spirityoda suggested, pictures would help. Chris
As Chris said, some do collect these. These can be made easily today, but older ones will have well settled grime in the recesses of the marks which (may) indicate they were made a very long time ago. I found two Buffalo nickels in a dateless roll this year that were old. One had zeros punched multiple times on the obverse and reverse, the other had the star of David punched many times. As to who punched them and why will likely be a question never answered unless they were done with a mark that indicated someone famous or an event of some sort. The same goes for Hobo nickels, very hard to identify unless the Hobo achieved some sort of recognition for his extraordinary art style.
Its not an 'n', although it looks like one. Its a Jewish letter 'he' which represents 'light/begining/power/creativity' taken with the Star of David, and t he tradition of leaving coins on the graves of loved ones. Would love to know more about it.
