I have these two Trade Dollars.. They are early 20th Century Chinese Counterfeits.. weight is light .. one with a rotation issue.. I need to know what I can do with these.. I want to sell but can't on Ebay since they are UNMARKED as Replica or Copies.. Am Stuck with these.. I know that some look for these without the "Replica" stamp??
Hi, for those who know the series, those are obvious fakes, but they could fool a lot of collectors. It is against the law to sell them, unless "copy" or "replica" is cut or stamped into the metal and easily readable, under the Hobby Protection Act, which is federal law. From an ethical standpoint, you shouldn't sell them unmarked, since obviously the buyer could flip them as 'genuine.' These are not collectible, since there are hundreds of thousands of them out there.
Thanks.. I would NEVER want to Burn Anyone.. And would never try to pass them as Real.. So Do I have to Buy a Punch.. Or just keep as Novelty items.. I thought there was a Market for the Fakes.. and I kinda see it as a Antique Historical Item?? I paid Nothing for them.. Maybe the Guy was in the same boat..
For less than 10 bucks you can buy a letter/number metal stamp set at Harbor Freight (1/8"). With a small hammer and a few light taps you can then stamp -C O P Y- on the coins, preferably in a location that will not cover any of the common counterfeit diagnostic areas. The stamp impressions will be impossible to remove so you can sell with clear conscience. Perhaps promote the sale as a learning tool for TD collectors?
