A book is a good start but to be able to develop the skills needed to detect counterfeit and altered coins you must look at actual examples of these coins. The best education in this area is the Detection of Counterfeit & Altered Coins course offered every year at the ANA Summer Seminar. There you will receive 4 1/2 days of instruction from two of the best at counterfeit detection (currently JP Martin (Senior Grader at ANACS) and Bob Campbell (former ANA President)) and you will get to apply your new knowledge by viewing the largest collection of counterfeit and altered coins in the US (from the ANA's collection).

The course begins in only 51 weeks. Registration should open around the first of the year. Your member discount will more than pay for your ANA membership.

If you don't want to wait that long or you cannot travel to Colorado for the course you can take a mini-course at an ANA show (e.g., the upcoming ANA World's Fair of Money in Baltimore).

A good book or DVD is Detecting Counterfeit & Altered US Coins by JP Martin. The DVD (featuring a very young JP) is available from the ANA Bookstore for about $50. Click here for details.

    greetings!
go to the ana ( american numismatic association) catalogue and you can get a dvd and book regarding detecting counterfeit and altered coins. it is well worth the money. there is also a weekly column in coin world magazine regarding fake coins for more knowledge as well.
    best wishes ...................steve
