Hi, I bought a coin off of ebay about a year ago, and took it to the local coin dealer to see if it was real. He's been in business around 30 years or more and has been in several books....and he said it was real but has been cleaned majorly. I recently put it on ebay because I need the money and within the first DAY of it being on, I've gotton 6 e-mails telling me it's a fake and that they're going to report me. Can you tell me if you think it's a fake and why? Thanks Note: This is NOT advertising.....do NOT bid! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...&category=11977&sspagename=STRK:MESSE:IT&rd=1
Can't tell for sure from the photos. Sometimes cleaned coins can be mistaken for counterfeits and vice versa. In fact some counterfeiters clean their coins to hide their trail. When you purchased this coin on ebay where was the seller? If this coin came from asia I'd be very suspect, as many fakes seem to come from that part of the world. Sorry I can't be more definative. If the coin were in my hand I'd be able to tell you for sure, I think. One easy way to tell is to weigh it. If it weighs exactly what it should that's a good sign. Exact weight opf genuine pieces can be found in the red book.
I e-mailed someone who e-mailed me telling me it was a fake.....and he wrote back telling me how to spot a fake. Apparently, they all have the same scratch on the shield at the exact same spot...just like mine. Also, it weighs 19 grams which is way too light. I'm going to take it to 1 more coin dealer for another opinion....and if it's a counterfeit....I'll just take it to the first coin dealer who told me it was real and sell it to him.
are you going to tell him that u think its a fake? i mean mayby you should try to get your money back. i know that thats a fat chance on ebay but who knows the seller may work with you.
oops sorry i guess i wasnt paying attention to what i was reading. i guess you you cant do that if you bought a year ago. sorry
Also....I found the records of who I bought it from about a year ago.....His name is Cuong Nguyen......shoulda known.
Glad to see you ended the auction early. The person that e-mailed you is absolutely correct. The "scratch" on the shield is the main way to identify Seated Liberty dollar fakes. The fact that it is underweight is also a sure fire giveaway. The seller, you bought it from, "Nguyen", sells highly deceptive fakes. He has been exporting them to the US for some time now.
Rolltide sorry to hear but I think you did the right thing in ending the auction. Selling the coin as genuine would be wrong.
