http://www.bowersandmerena.com/auctions/AuctionLot.aspx?LotID=260016 It looks like this piece did not generate the enthusiasm expected. You can't say that Bowers did not do their best to promote the contemporary counterfeit...
I think its pretty cool. Cheaper then owning the real deal, lol. No different then Fourrees with ancients though.
Considering the poor quality of the fake and no precious metal content, $700 strikes me as pretty good. One thing in the description struck me as odd Lead or copper to give it the heft of gold weight? It would have weighed half of what it should have. Heft? As compared to what, a tin counterfiet? If they wanted real heft they would have used platinum (which counterfeiters did use in the late 1800's) And of course there is "bleed through" the plating was very thin and it wore through. Although as bad as this counterfeit is I would be surprised if it circulated much. Of course on the other hand ten dollars was a lot of money to get stuck for, so I imagine whoever got it would try to pass it along and not be the guy left holding the bag.
Do either of these coins or anything else this seller is selling look suspiscious? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1934-P-WASH...25?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item483a3db085 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1909-VDB-CH...67?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item35b5b7e867 I have my doubts as to their authenticity but am far from a pro...
I didn't see anything right off on the 2 you posted to make me think they might be fakes. But, if that quarter has good mint luster I'll eat my hat. As for the cent, based on those pics I can't tell much about it at all. That alone would be reason for me not to bid.
