Counterfeit, Error or Token?

I saw this posted on eBay and not only is the obverse wrong for the type (close to the large diameter quarter which was discontinued in 1828), but the reverse does not match any Reverse I can see after a quick glance through my CENT BOOK with at leaf under D of UNITED well right of the outer curve. But it looks very convincing.

Anybody seen this before? Could it be a mule of a counterfeit product from the days when many products were made outside the mint to meet demand from early collectors for a 1829 quarter?

Well, that was probably the worst eBay description I've ever read. Yet it somehow sold for $127... I've had enough of society today time for bed.

The first picture is the obverse of a 1829 Bust Half Dollar. In searching the internet for the picture, you can see that it was grabbed from this thread on the Coin Community Forum:

The other is the reverse of a Matron Head Large Cent. In contrast to the first picture, is it obviously professional, pulled from a different source. I searched again for this picture, and it is the "plate coin" for the Matron cent listing at numista.com. The obverse shows that the coin is an 1820 Cent and originated from Heritage.

It is quite an odd listing, he just cobbled together pictures he found on the internet and made an ebay listing. Yet he still managed to get $127. :wacky:

WITH THE PURCHASE OF THIS HISTORIC ARTIFACT, I WILL SELECT A RANDOM COIN THAT COULD DATE FROM 14 BC TO 1969 AD!!

    Hmm, a wheaty?
Oh and for it to be an artifact, it has to be a little older...

    You just can't fix stupid.

Its listings like this that is turning Ebay into simply a US based Alibaba. I find myself searching there less and less, which is sad since I have bought from there since just a year or so after it started.

Thanks for the assistance. The Reverse M of 1820 has a unique leaf positions well right of D of UNITED and well right of the second S of STATES. Reverse of 1820 N-13.

Cobbled images and captured images from public sources which are then used to commit fraud should be prosecuted. But where? Does there need to be federal jurisdiction just for internet crimes?

Looks like the seller just uploaded the wrong obverse picture to me. I bet the buyer got a great deal on a BU cent.

Um, I will take that bet. Seller selling something he does not know much about from China, yeah, its a great move to buy early BU US coins out of China nowadays. It says VA, but reads like someone from China wrote it. Even if not, a great memebr here has proven the posted photos were stolen online, another HUGE red flag for a buyer.

So, what are the terms of our wager sir? ;)
