The 1871 Shallow N is a very scarce reverse type. Many may have never even see a real one in hand, so this fake will fool just about anyone! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250377275128 By itself no one would have any problem with this coins authenticity. But once you compare it with this known one, it become very worrisome. http://indiancent.wikispaces.com/1871+Counterfeit Although one has a die break over the OF and the other doesn't, they are from the same obverse. See the mark on the neck on both! I don't think the reverse dies are the same.
Those are well made forgeries. But I do see some style differences in the lettering, especially on the N's reverse. Thanks for posting the info.
Die struck from transfer dies. It looks like the die crack is real, not transferred. I notified the owner. The N's are shallow on some 1871's - S4 and S5.
WOW! That would fool me in a heartbeat! I still have problems with it, even though I know it's a fake. dd: I guess I'll stick to my old coppers and won't be collecting IHC's. :goofer: Thanks for showing us this, Rick! :thumb: Ribbit
I see the seller has ended the listing, he's an honest person and it would have to be a good fake to fool him! Thanks for posting that, Mr. Snow!
You are truly the Indian cent master. I would have bought that coin myself. And I guarantee I could sell it to at least 95 out of 100 dealers.
That's a very good fake. The raised line from the Indian's ear lobe to her cheek is one clue it is frake. Also, it's hard to see in the pics but I think I see a small raised dot to the right of the date and a raised line below the '8' in the date.
I was looking at the denticles, reverse side, 2 o'clock. They just kinda look off to me. Would those be an indication???
