Greetings! I am somewhat new to collecting; I did it a bit when I was younger and just picked it back up. I just got this Mercury Dime that was what looks like a counter stamp (probably just pmd) in it albeit a very crude one. I know identification of specific counter stamps is very difficult as there are so many, I was just looking for advice on trying to find information on identifying them? This one might just be too simple/crude to even bother although it has a very deep impression.
First, welcome to the neighborhood, Matt! I'm 99.999999999999999% positive that it is PMD, and I'm guessing that the reverse will show some indication of damage in the same position. ~ Chris
you are correct, it almost looks struck through by whatever hit it, I assumed it was PMD due to how simple it is, Thanks for the response!
It's possible that it's a counterstamp but I'm leaning more towards PMD. Not all counterstamps have names. Welcome to CT.
Could it be a V for victory? Crude as it is, I see a V but then pareidolia could be at play. Welcome to the neighborhood Matthew.
For the most part, counterstamps that are identifiable are 19th century merchant counterstamps, effectively making the coin into an advertising piece. That the first thing I thought. Damage from a punch.
