Hello My 13 year old daughter has been searching coins for errors and found a 1967 dime with a rim that looks melted on both sides. The wider rim is not uniform in width and covers some letters such as NIT and MER. It is very smooth and shiny in these areas. I think it must be a post mint error but I can't give her a real answer. I have looked all over for any kind of picture or description of something similar and did not find any. I don't have a picture but could try and take one if it seems like it might be an error. Anyone willing to try and explain it? Thanks
This is interesting... At first when I saw your description I was considering heat damage of some kind... but I don't know what to say about this coin. hopefully someone else can help you out
Welcome to the forum:hail:. I don't want to start with the spooned thing again, so I would say it looks like it was squeezed in a press or whatever. The edges pressed over like that on both sides doesn't look like anything that could happen at the mint. It could even be a encased coin that was used on a necklace or other item.
I agree with the jewelry piece assumption. But I don't understand WHY someone would use a roosie as a jewelry piece...
The coin is street damage a million cars must have ran over it. the coin is not spooned because you still have the reeded edges visible . I would call it street car damage coin look at the black spots on the edges of the coin . Just to clarfiy the terminology if it was a spooned coin that's what the are called not dryer coins That's a myth there called spooned coins NOTdryer coins as other unexperianced people call them. Not an encased coin either WELCOME TO THE FORUM Alien JAZEC
A dryer coin is where a coin spends some time in a dryer continuously rolling and tumbling creating a rolled smooth edge. A spooned coin is smacked with the concave part of a spoon to roll the edges of a coin (usually a nickel or larger) and then cut the center out to make a ring. Who in their right mind would try to make a ring out of a dime, unless you have very tiny fingers, you would have to be from another planet. Just like this dryer coin.
Now this is more like a coin that was in the dryer and knocked around and not conformed like your coin posted does' not make a bit of sense. Now do you understand finally.i have made some for my alien grandchildren, and some human children which will fit on a little girls fingers. opps there it is and persistency will not get you anywhere link Alien Jazec hackedgadgets.com/2006/07/29/coin-ring/ go to this link and see how there made rings
I have done this with a few guys from work over a few beverages. You take a coin and try to strech it with out leaving marks. You heat it but not too much stick between pieces of leather or gasket materal and wop it with a brass hammer. If you measure the diameter you may find this to be true. Ice
