I came across this attractive 1879 Morgan Dollar. The price variations for one point is outrageous and I would like to know everyone's opinion on the grade. MS64: $140 MS65: $800 MS66: $3,400 MS67: $40,000 MS68: whuhhhh....
HELLO! I assure you it is not whizzed. The lighting and the photo gives it that weird white look (God knows why), but in hand it has nice cartwheel luster.
Oh, no! MS63? Just Kill me, then! Do you think my morgan is as scratched as THIS? This is a prime example of MS63. Do you really think my Morgan is as scratched as THIS?
I don't think it's real. It looks too smooth, too modern, like a silver eagle. But it could be the light as well.
That example you posted as a MS 63 looks more like a 61 or at best a 62. Your particular coin looks nice but a little strange. I would need more pictures with more light on the coin to really be able to take a stab at the grade.
Agreed. I've seen hundreds of morgan dollars and something about it makes me 50/50 on it's authenticity. The only fakes I've seen are minted on white metal planchets, but I've heard of "premium fakes" being minted on silver ones. With the regular fakes, the details are there, but the cast/off color metal is a dead give a way, if a regular coin silver planchet was used, I suspect it would look like this. The bad thing about the premium fakes is the weight is the same, but you might be able to count the reeds.
while not judging it's authenticity I would say this morgan dollar would grade at MS63 maybe ms64 reason being is that there are a lot more bag marks on the obverse and on the reverse there are some stains that deter from the coins eye appeal. Also I compared your coin with a few of my PCGS Ms64's and mine appear to have a few less marks on the obverse
I also think it isn't genuine. To me it just doesn't have "the look". Perhaps morgan dude will see this and pipe in.
Well, let's see what PCGS has to say in the next few days! I'll let everyone know when it gets back. I don't understand why you guys say it isn't genuine - color? That's not its natural color, in hand it is as shiny as any high-grade Morgan. I wish I would've taken more pictures. I bought this coin in 1984 when there were a lot, and I mean a lot less counterfeits.
I feel like I've been stabbed. This is probably one of my favorite coins in my collection.... It never crossed my mind to weigh it. It's not currently in my possession, instead, it's at PCGS's facility.
