if a quarter was struck on a nickel planchet, would the coin get bigger as it was pressed and be quarter size? or would it be nickel size with some quarter details? reason I am asking is because I have a 1981 P that weighs exactly 5g. there is no corrosion damage or anything. it looks normal
It would be smaller than the size of a normal quarter, but I think a little bit larger than a normal nickel because of the expanding metal.
If a nickel planchet is struck in a quarter press the diameter would be larger than a nickel and the thickness would be thinner than a quarter. The weight is correct for a nickel planchet. Is there any evidence of a copper core? If not, it would be one to send in for authentication.
This quarter may have been struck on a rolled thin planchet or a dime stock planchet. There are some quarters that were struck on dime stock where the mint workers mistakenly punched the quarter planchets from metal intended for dimes.
