I always forget that the nickel is 75% copper. I imagine that the mint has tested alternative compositions - what would be a less expensive (but equally durable) composition? I've been impressed with the durability of Aluminum Bronze coinage (ie; the French 1F in the 20s). The color and weight are pleasing as well. Does anyone know the elemental composition for those? (It looks like they might be ~80% copper, which would defeat the purpose: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium_bronze )
I'm in favor of eliminating the cent altogether. I know our elected officials have much more important stuff (like what the other political party is up to) to deal with an outdated coin. While they are at it, change the nickel composition to something cost effective, and maybe get rid of the dollar bill for good measure.
