Because any independent country can decide what will be legal tender within its boundaries only. Palau, is an independent island nation in the Pacific Ocean (pop. 22,500, area 2.5 times Washington, DC) according to the CIA World Factbook.

I dunno, it looks pretty cool, except I'm not sure about the "stand up" thing. The basic design looks neat.

I put these in the same category as the coins that have bits of coal from the titantic, and ones with small stones, etc. They are more novelties than anything else, and there's plenty of different ones. These types of coins are neat, a bit of fun, but not worth how much they cost. "Worth" is relative though. They might be idiotic to collect, but at least not as much as thimbles from various states or tiny spoons from tourist areas.

Addmission: I do have the set of guitar shaped coins from Somalia, which are a favorite of my students.

I put it in the same catrgory of the "standing" Statue of Liberty and Trade center Tower "stand-up" A petty attempt of a private mint to exploit naive people into thinking this are rare coins being sought by collectors...

Novelty coins like this are highly collectable. But not by coin nuts. I am a car guy first and coins are a distant second as far as my passions go. Items like these make very nice display items next to diecast models, some of which are very collectable.

I personally don't like them. I like coins that have been circulated (with exception, like ASE and all, but you know what I mean. ;) ) But, to each his own. But I wouldn't spend $30 on that. Especially if they are saying it is a dollar coin lol.

    Phoenix
