Oh, ok, well Im just getting opinions from you folks who know all about things. To hoard, or not to hoard? Will there ever be a time that it's worth more than face value? Just throwing it out there.
if it became legal to melt the cents, then once you SELL them to a smelter for probably less than face value, then they have to melt them and take out the impurities (5% tin and zinc right !!), then they'll have their pure copper to reintroduce into the copper supplies. Right now you get 1 cent face value for them. Of course, if you put them in small piles and sell them on eBay then you could probably get some money out of it. You could always "make unsearched rolls" right ? If you check out eBay you'll see what you can and can't get. don't forget to subtract fees and what not. Or, if you can melt them and remove impurities then you'll be able to get more money for them. But your electric bill might be kinda high.
Well, I will take your lead and roll them up for exchange. Am I doing this penny seeking correctly? I've been hitting banks mostly. I've found a few good things, but I'm wondering if there is a better way to do things.?
Don't ask me. I don't search pennies. I do however hoard all my change .. for a very long time. I have way more than 2 lbs of cents. Stuff going back to when I stored change since the 1970s. Stuff that I haven't searched. It's just a weird habit. I do collect older larger denominations coinage, although not really cents. It just doesn't make sense to me.
I am the same. Two years ago the bottom of my dresser collapsed under the weight. Wife wasn't very happy.... I just moved them to a better reinforced location.
My concrete garage floor has sunk where the 2, 55 gallon drums of hoarded unrolled change is kept and the boxes of rolled cents, nickels, and quarters.
Glad to know I'm not the only insane person out there ... I recall a picture of somewhere here of their garage with several safes full, and then bags and bags of cents stacked on top. This though was an interesting thread - yes, that's 1,200 lbs @Seattlite86 .... https://www.cointalk.com/threads/what-do-1-200-lbs-of-lincoln-cents-look-like.312101/
You cannot get copper price for bronze or brass, which is what pre-1982 cents are. Repeat, NOT copper, bronze or brass. Elemental copper is expensive to make from bronze or brass cents. Check the scrap prices for bronze and brass - WAY below copper.
It's only worth it if you have a lot of them and you got them for face. Because one day you might find a buyer to give you 1.5 or 2 times face for everything.
