Copper 1965 Half?

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by cookiemonster12, Mar 26, 2011.

  1. I'm at my grandfather's house, looking through his coins, and found something odd. A Kennedy half from 1965 with copper on the edge. It weighs about 11.3 grams. I know that they were 40% silver during this year, but I found it quite odd. I'll try and post pictures later. Any thoughts?

Nothing special. Edge is supposed to look like that. Weight is right for 40% half.

  4. You sure about that? I have a bunch of other 40%ers and they are all silver on the edge. This one is bright copper

  5. It also only covers 2/3rds of the width

They are clad, with outer layers of .800 silver and .200 copper bonded to an inner core of .209 silver and .791 copper.

I have found several 40%ers that look like that. You are right, most don't, but some do. Nothing special.

  8. Ohh, I forgot that they are clad. My bad
