In commemoration of 1 year of collecting ancients and the warmth and friendship that the ancients collector community in cointalk has shown to me, I am happy to announce that I will be giving away this rare AE of Philip II from Deultum, with the coolest fat dolphin on the reverse. Anyone in the US or Canada qualifies. What I'm looking for is a quick post why you either want or should receive this coin. It doesn't have to be anything elaborate, simple is probably best (humor is always welcomed). I will choose a winner at midnight, Eastern Standard Time tonight, November 2, 2016 (technically Nov 3), and that person will get this coin as well as Best Answer designation from me. Good luck!
That is a classy gesture! This is a great community. How about: I used to be buds with a dolphin, Marty, until one day he swam out to sea and never came back. I still wonder if it was something I said. :-( OK, that is not totally true, but it should have been true. There are much more worthy people than myself, like someone younger who is just starting out collecting, so my post is only in jest.
I think I should get it so you can prove you really don't hate me or my opinions! If you agree and I win, I think you should donate it to the YN auction at the 2017 ANA Summer Seminar.
No, lol. If you recall, I sold the coin to you. I'm sure you'll pass it on to someone worthy. I applaud your generosity.
All kidding aside. I also don't own too many animal coins on the reverse and it would be great to have a dolphin. Plus my mother loves dolphins and with some health issues with this year, she'd probably give this coin more of a look then my regular coins.
I'll play: I like this coin because it would be the latest dolphin in my collection. For the record, I gave up my membership in ANA while I still had the J prefix because back then they did even less with ancients than now. As far as being up close and personal with named Cetacians, the photo below shows my grandson dining at Sea World with Tilikum before he became famous for killing a trainer. When we were there we did note that the buffet we were served contained no seafood courses. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilikum_(orca)
Ok, so far I have entries for Insider, jwitten, dougsmit, and Mat. Ideally I'd like to pick the best post, but if I get too many great entries by tonight and it becomes hard to choose, I may write the top 5 or 6 entries on pieces of paper, put it in my bingo ball cage, spin it, and select someone at random, or pick the best 5 and roll a dice. We shall see.
Because I don't have anything like it and I wants one. Oh yeah, and I won't say anymore about you falling off the wagon you never got on in the first place.
I really think you should give it to me, since I always wanted a coin from the year that Doug turned 100 years old! Thanks and I will forward my address.
Laughed out loud about that one. Funny, but pretty mean. It is not true that he met Marcus Aurelius in person.
@Sallent your offer is a kind gesture. I truly hope it passes to someone who will enjoy it. I am not asking, rather I am lauding your generosity.
*This is not an entry* Sallent, your kind gesture is the type of thing that sets the CT Ancients board apart from other places on the net. What an awesome coin too!
Oops. Ok, then, then the winner should pretend I gave them Best Answer. Look, the winner is getting a very uncommon coin. That is worth 1000 Best Answers as far as I'm concerned.
Thanks for such a generous offer to the forum. You display the character of a learner and teacher. Nice to have you here. I have made your thread a featured thread for 48 hrs to try and encourage more participation and camaraderie. Jim
