Pounds, pence, florin, sterling, shillings, crowns, the whole UK money system is very confusing. Maybe someone who lives across the pond can help me out. I have 1 1/2 Crown Coin 4 2 Shilling coins. 4 10 pence coins 1 1 Shilling coin. 2 6 Pence Coins 1 20 pence coin 2 5 Pence Coins. 1 penny. If someone can covert that to USD I would appreciate it. I would also like to know if these coins can still be used.
You have a mixture of pre decimal and decimal coinage, Shillings and Half Crowns are not used now but can be exchanged for face value. Sixpences cannot be exchanged. I don`t know if you have the large pre decimal penny or the smaller decimal penny. The exchange rate as of Friday for your coins amounted to $2.09.
This explains pre decimal coins and the Decimal coinage after 1971. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_British_banknotes_and_coins
Thanks for the help. One thing I've noticed is that a lot of countries made their coins obsolete, made them worth less, but the good ol' american coins are spendable....all of them.
Pre 1947 Halfcrown, Two Shillings, Shillings and Sixpences are 50% silver Pre 1920 they are 925 Sterling silver.
Yep, pretty normal in many countries of the world indeed. Does not necessarily have anything to do with "making them worth less" though - in many cases it is simply a question of what is practical. As long as people have enough time to redeem the old change, I don't see a problem. Christian
