I've been trying to come up with a unique collection to put together just to break up the monotony of my variety hunting. Nothing that will break the budget, but just truly unique: maybe even one of a kind. To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, a thought that popped into my mind was a collection of current MS coins from all the states that have nuclear weapons. Do you see the quirkiness I'm after? In other words, don't tell me to build a registry set of early American copper, but instead come up with something cheap and unique. I will take my top 5 favorite ideas and let the members of CT vote on the best one. The winner will receive not only a 1959-D RPM-010, but also an example of every duplicate RPM that I find for an entire month after the contest end(I search BU rolls, so often I find multiples of the same die pair). Here's the first coin that you will receive, and it's from a darned nice stage B die state that shows a lot more of the secondary punch than later states do.
I'll start thinking. Only problem I see with the nuclear weapons would be how do you tell who really has them? lol And how many guesses per member?
A very interesting contest prize concept! I will put my thinking hat on but I want to ask first, are you only seeking US Coin collection ideas? You mentioned nukes and states, I wasn't sure if you meant US states that have such weapons or 'States' as in nations which possess them, implying that you also seek an interest in world/ancient coins to collect.
Hmmm, I have one for you. We just had an election so why not current MS coins from either a Red State or a Blue one...you pick as it was your vote. Or option 2, MS Silver Proofs from States which a President was from. Option 3, MS coins from states you have visited.
waite a few months and the uk will be joining that list lol. 1) you could collect coins with unusual animals on(like a jersey 1p i found today that has crabs lol) 2) collect coins from countries in periods of war(and i dont just mean 3rd reich stuff) 3) if your gunna go for world stuff you could pick 1 country that has an unusual country and build up a set around that. jersey would be a good example. you can get real nice examples for very little. like this 1
How about coins/medals with images of other coins on them?? That would be a pretty cool set to have. I'm not sure how many are out there and it could be a U.S. and World coin set. Here's an example of what I'm talking about: That's the silver medal that came in the 1993 Philadelphia Set put out by the U.S. Mint. I have seen some Medallic Art Co. medals that have images of coins on them too... one medal had an example of each U.S. dollar from the flowing hair type to the Ike Dollars on it. I've also seen some ANA medals that have images of coins on them too I think. I'm sure other coins/medals with coins on them are out there too.
Since the world is getting stingy with copper, how about copper plated coins? I.e. US, UK, Canadian cents come straight up but there's a lot more world coins that are plated copper. South Africa, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia. Actually I can't name THAT many. Hm.
How about coins that have architecture on them? I'm sure that there would be a good variety of coins that would contain architecture on them.
A type set of US and world coins whose obverse portraits most closely match those of the same era of US coins you collect. For instance with modern US coins you need world coins who match each like: Lincoln facing right portrait needs to be paired with another country whose leader or famous person, allegorical figure in portrait, facing right appears on the obverse, in copper (or brass) composition and is as close in diameter as possible to the US coin. Jefferson Nickel facing left, size, nickel or other white metal compositions, etc. Roosevelt Dime facing left, size, clad, reeded edge maybe, etc Washington Quarter facing left, size, clad, reeded edge maybe, etc Kennedy Half Dollar facing left, size, clad, reeded edge maybe, etc One Dollar (depends which modern design you pick) you get the idea... I'd suggest not pairing your set to Canada since their coins are amongst the closest in size and composition alreay. Try something more obscure or mix countries in your set if you like: maybe only Asian countries or only Latin American countries, only European nations...
My guesses: -Type sets from years with a rare denomination, and buy a replica of the rare (for example: collect 1909-S, get a 1909-S Cent replica, and get a whole genuine set for the other coins). -Collect a set of coins from the U.S. or any nation that displays historical events, such as a New Jersey state quarter. -Compile a set of coins that depict designs that are also on or are similar to designs on paper money. -Create a set of coins from the birth year and the year of the death of your favorite person depicted on a coin (obviously can't be older than the 1920's. That's when things get a little higher in price). -Start a collection with type sets for each year that your sports team has one the year's championship.
Other guesses: -Create an educational collection of damaged coins, one coin of each U.S. design from 1900-now (for example: Barber half, jewelry damage; Washington quarter, cleaned). -Another educational set of coins, one counterfeit and one genuine example of each U.S. design from 1900-now. -Collection of coins that has one of each coin designed by a specific designer and/or engraver. -A type set for the year of your favorite recent historical event (example: 1969 type set for the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon). Let's see what you other guys come up with!
What about a memory set? Something that you do not want to forget that happened that year. Maybe when you pass it down you can share those memories.
Here is one that I find fun, a year set of coins, start with the current year and go back as far as you can go, you can link this set to your personal heritage, frinstance start with the US, go back until the year your parents came to this land, then go back year by year as far as you can go. This type of set can include various denominations, types, (whatever you find interesting) plus you can get some nice examples of coins in nice condition by not getting the key dates for that year, The US collection gets a little pricey once you start getting back to the 18th century, but since Spanish coins circulated in this country up till 1857 you could include those coins as being part of the everyday commerce of the nation in those times.
Pick a single common year and create a 'single-mintmark-whole-roll-type-set' of coins. The cheaper route is to do this with current coins in circulation. For more of a challenge and a wee-bit more expense involved, try: wheats, buffalos, mercs, SLQs, WLHs, Peace. The challenge and expense of the latter gets really tough to find a common year as certain coins may not exists across all denominations for a given year when it is exceedingly common for a different denomination of the same year.
Another guess: -type sets from important years in your life (for example: type set for high school graduation year, type set for the year you graduated from college, etc.)
