Contest 68: Coin ID contest: WE HAVE A WINNER! I got a new QX3+ computer microscope for Christmas and I had the chance to finally play with it today, so I decided to do a coin identification contest. I have taken 40 close-up photos of parts of US coins with my QX3+ set to 60X magnification. I uploaded all of the photos to this photo hosting site. Just click on the link above to view the photos and click on any individual photo to view a larger blow-up of the image. Here are the rules: 1) This contest will end at 11:59 PM Eastern Time (GMT-5) on February 4, 2006. Any entry posted after that will be ignored. 2) The winner will be the person with the most points when the contest ends. In the event of a tie the person who achieved their score first (had their post logged into the thread earlier) will be the winner. There is no limit on the number of times that anyone is allowed to enter this contest. The winner will receive a coin prize of my choosing. 3) There are 50 possible points. That breaks down to one point for each of the 40 identifications plus 10 bonus points, one each for the 10 coins that you can determine the date as well as the type from the pictures. (i.e. if one of the pictures is of a type one buffalo nickel then you would receive one point for identifying the type as a buffalo nickel and one bonus point for realizing that the coin is dated 1913). 4) Just type up your guesses and send them to me through a PM and I will let you know your score by posting a "leader-board" in the thread. 5) My decisions stand and I am the final authority on any rules related questions. I believe that all 40 coins can be identified by their pictures if you are resourceful enough, so have fun!! 6) Here are the only 2 hints I plan on giving: One coin is a fake (but a good one, so it shouldn't affect the contest); And at least one coin is a classic commemorative coin and there are no modern commems in the contest. 7) I am running an identical contest on a different coin site so please only enter this contest on one site or the other, but not both. thanks! Good luck and have a blast!! Here is the leader board: 1) foundinrolls 50 points 2) YNcoinpro_U.S. 49 points 3) Speedy 42 points 4) Charlie32 41 points 5) Bonedigger 28 points 6) julzboi661 13 points 7) dopeuser 13 points 8) Skylark 6 points
Whoh, you're really making us work for this prize. It will take me a long time but I hope to fulfill the challenge. SOunds like fun.
Can I ask one question....or phone a friend These are only US coins right?...and are there any gold coins? Spencer
Ask away, but I reserve the right to not answer... Yep! Call whoever you think can help you. This would fall under the category of creative resourcefulness, which I am encouraging. Yes, all of them are official US coins, save for the fake, but it is a fake of a US coin, so it kinda fits. errr, kinda...
I think that's a fine idea. I will edit the rules to make it so. ok, it's now edited, please PM your answers to me, then I will let you know your score by posting it on the leader board.
I love these types of puzzels but since I dont collect US coins, I cant compare the pics to those that I have, have seen or know of. So I only got 6 Congrats to the winner
Well the #1 problem I've had was looking for things and they might be one 2 coins just alike....it kindof puts you in the place to know what coin it is...I think I can count 2 or 3 coins that have the same design and they are both shown on this test.... Speedy
Yep, there appears to be a bit of luck involved getting the right one when guessing on a couple of these. Bone
Hmmm, I don't completely agree. I believe that you are correct about # 22 so if you come up with any correct answer I will give you (or anyone) credit for that one. But the other two that I think you are talking about (#13 and #25) can be diferentiated by looking closely. While I did what I did with #25 intentionally to make you look at the details, I debated with myself whether #13 was fair and I decided that it was fair enough. hmmm, that was more of a hint than I planned on giving, but oh well. I believe that some amount of luck is involved, but I doubt that it will be the determining factor. Remember guys there is no limit to the number of times you may enter the contest, so there is no penalty for submitting partial tests to me for scoring with the intent to finish and resubmit later with corrections.
Hey TCT....I'm not reading any hints above If I'm going to try to get this test I'm going to do it with out many hints One thing I like about coins...you can never stop learning....I think I'll be sending in it in one more time....after looking and looking I found some I total missed because I forgot what coin had what detail Speedy
