I just want to have a contest and not really sure what i want to do so here goes. I will draw a random name on Friday and all you have to do is just reply to this question. Have you ever been to a live auction in person? a simple yes or no will be great but if you have a story then share it with all of us to hear. I am sure I can come up with something to give away with all of theses precious coins I have laying around. I will draw a random name form all of you who reply. If you reply more than once you will still only get 1 entry but if you tell a story you will get 3. Good Luck!!
Yes , I try to attend as many local ones as I can . I have never came across anything great , just a few good deals here and there .
Yes, I go to auctions quite often! My best auction was on a Friday night when I purchased 15 uncirculated Morgan Dollars. 8 (1880-S) for $26 each and 7 (1879-S) for $28 a each. After having them awhile I decided to send a couple of them in for grading. In my first batch I received a 1879-s Ms64 Cameo PL and a 1880-S Ms65... After that I decide to just send all the rest in that way I could the sell all the duplicates easier. So, in my 2nd batch I received a 1879-S Ms65 Cameo PL and a 1880-S MS66. I'm holding on to the High Grades and selling the lower grades. Thanks for the contest! Hope to hear some great auction stories! SM
The Good Old Days I remember going to the auctions with my Grandfather many years ago. He was a man of trade. He would buy boxes of what I would consider junk for 50cents to a dollar even less sometimes. The crazy thing was that most always he would find something in these boxes that would sell or trade a profit for him. I have a lot of great memories of riding around to these auctions and watching him do his trading. God rest his soul.
I go to auctions occassionally with my mom, when I am visiting her. One time we went to an auction, and they had everything out to preview, and there was an old change purse. Inside the purse were about 20 barber dimes, including 3 1913-s's. I asked the auctioneer if the he knew the coins were in there, and he said yes, but they weren't valuable. He auctioned it off as a small purse with old coins inside, and I bought it for 4 dollars : ) What surprises me, is the fact that he said they weren't valuable, as I've met some auctioneers who are very well versed in coins.
Yep---been to a few....about at least 1 a year and maybe more. One I remember was a guy that had a large coin collection and I was new and was bidding on somethings and 2 older collectors sat in front of me and my dad...when the 1982 Washington Comm's came to auction they would only bid $4...we bid $6 and won...at that time the list value was $5....now with silver the list value is abotu $8....they sat there and had a grand time taking about why ever got the sets got a bad deal! Speedy
Yes, we've got quite a few old farm implements in the back field. A couple in the front yard as well. Bone
I've been to a few, but as im in the country they have far more farm implements then coins. I do luv going to go watch them auction off the tobacco. Watching the older farmers, hearing them tell a story or two from their years of raising tobacco/farming/hunting and fishing.. yep I enjoy that a lot.
Being an auctioneer myself I can attest that coins used to be a pain in my butt until I understood them. I have made mistakes like that before. I remember when I first got into coins thinking to myself who stupid I was the time I sold all those old morgan dollars. (lord only knows what the dates or min marks where) There was 13 of them and i sold them all for 4 dollars a peice. Talk about kickking my own butt! I know better now though and I only wish I had knowledged myself sooner on coins. In the auction industry you either love or hate coins and I have never figured that out yet.
I've been to a few auctions. Up here in northern PA, you either dress warmly or go late to get the 'Smalls'.
I've been to an auction-just not a coin auction I went to the WIld TUrkey Federation banquet a few years ago when me dad was the chairman and I can remeber bidding on one (1) bumper sticker with the intentions of just bidding once-but when I went back someone bid higher. So I had to bid again. I took it up to $20-maybe not the smartest decision :desk:
No, but I have been to a few silent auctions. Got a nice silver proof dollar for a dollar at one of them. :thumb:
Never been to a coin auction, but living in the mid-west many people have auctions instead of estate sales. They are a great way to spend an afternoon cheap. I often go to auctions then sell stuff on ebay. You can get great deals sometimes, but sometimes, when the crowd is really busy, you wind up paying as much at an auction as you would if you bought it new.
Never been to one, but this is a fantastic website and have learned an immeasurable amount info from all these forums. ...........................................................................................................................
